The Birth of a Vehicle
THE BIRTH OF A- VEHICLE 1 Design The company design team develops sketches for several potential models, which are then rendered in a CAD program. Designers build miniature three-dimensional clay models of the design. 2 Manufacturing The vehicle begins to take shape in the press shop, where coil machines cut blank metal sheets. Sketches are made to represent interior colours and materials. The metal sheets are cut and shaped into car body parts. 3 Painting The car is cleaned, degreased, and then coated in a layer of zinc phosphate to protect the metal surfaces. 4 Assembly The official car colour is applied by robots using high-speed rotary atomizers, followed by a clear lacquer coat. The molded plastic bumper is added to the vehicle. Both computer controlled machines and employees assemble the motor. Seats, carpets and doors are installed and fluids like the coolant and oil are filled. 5 Quality Control The vehicle undergoes safety tests including wheel alignment and brake performance to ensure that quality standards are met. 6 Crash Testing Vehicles undergo crash tests and are assigned safety ratings. Safety ratings range from poor, marginal, acceptable, and good. To be considered a top safety pick, a vehicle must earn a "good" rating. 7 Sales The sale department takes charge of distributing the vehicle to dealerships. A consumer takes possession of a brand new car!
