WHO WILL BE THE UNITED STATES' MOST IMPORTANT ALLIES? The Pew Research Center asked members of the Council on Foreign Relations, an international think tank, who they thought would be America's most important allies in the future. Here are the top 10-ranked economies that are likely to fill that role: 8. EUROPEAN UNION/EUROPE 4. JAPAN 6. GERMANY 2. CHINA 7. TURKEY 5. MEXICO 3. BRAZIL 9. SOUTH KOREA 1. INDIA 10. AUSTRALIA Rank 1 (Most Important) Rank 10 WHICH ECONOMIES WILL LESSEN IN IMPORTANCE TO THE U.S.? The Pew Research Center also asked CFR members which economies they thought were most likely to lessen in importance as America's allies. Here are the top 10 economies most likely to do so: 1. EUROPEAN UNION/EUROPE 8. RUSSIA 3. UNITED KINGDOM 2. FRANCE 6. JAPAN 10. ITALY 9. PAKISTAN 7. EGYPT 5. ISRAEL 4. SAUDI ARABIA Rank 1 (Most Likely To Lessen In Importance) Rank 10 The European Union and Japan were the only regions to be among the top 10 in both ranked lists. While the European Union was mentioned in both rankings, several countries within the EU were also mentioned. Germany ranked sixth among economies most likely to gain importance, while France, Italy and the United Kingdom were mentioned in the ranking of countries that would lessen in importance.
