Responsive Webdesign: an ocean of opportunity and growth

IResponsiveWebDesign an ocean of opportunity and growth While mobile devices have been around for years, 2012 seems like the year that designing web sites for mobile users has gone mainstream. New solutions to address mobile users such as responsive design - that weren't even part of the lexicon a year ago - are being adopted by leading brands. More than ever web designers will need to keep in mind that their creations will be viewed on mobile devices. The following astounding mobile statistics will attest to the ocean of possibilities responsive web design is opening up. There are more iPhones sold every day than there are babies being born Apple sells about 378,000 iPhones every day. The average birth rate worldwide clocks in at 371,000 a day. 371.000 378.000 By the end of 2012, there will be more mobile devices connecting to the Internet than there are people on Earth In 2011, mobile data traffic was 8 times the size of the entire global Internet in 2000 (597 petabytes vs. 75 petabytes). That was only a dozen years ago, but it may as well have been eons. 480 million Android users generate 1.3 billion device activations per day The number has grown drastically over the years and has now moved well past the 1 million mark. It's not sitting at 1.3 device activations per day but is steadily climbing. That's not all though, Android now has an install base of 480 million users. 480.000.000 1.300.000.000 65% of internet connections on the African continent are exclusively on mobile It's no secret that mobile is the medium for Africa; millions use mobile-only social networks, young cellphone users are driving the growth of Twitter on the continent and mobile payment systems are major ecommerce players. Wondering why? It may have something to do with the fact that mobile penetration in Africa is currently around 65%, it's the second biggest mobile market in the world and smartphones are outselling traditional computers four to one. 65% 17% of U.S. cell phone owners do most of their online browsing on their phone, rather than a computer or other device The definition of a "cell internet user" includes anyone who uses the internet or email on their cell phone, and 55% of all adult cell phone owners use their phones for one or both of these reasons. Because 88% of U.S. adults now own a cell phone, that works out to 49% of all U.S. adults who go online using a cell phone at least occasionally. 17%, At the end of 2011, there were 6 billion mobile subscriptions 120 90 I50 That is equivalent to 87 percent of the world population. And is a huge increase from 5.4 billion in 2010 and 4.7 billion mobile sub- scriptions in 2009. Today, 180 85% of the World Will Have 2017 High-Speed Mobile Internet by 2017 리 0 85% of the world's population has access to a mobile phone with voice and text capabili- ties. Five years from now, in 2017, the same amount of the global community will have access to high-speed 3G Internet through mobile phones KMAL by @vanseijen for Nexus Themes, provider of free responsive WordPress themes www.nexusthemes.com twitter.com/nexusthemes facebook.com/nexusthemes Sources: http://viget.com/advance/10-astounding-mobile-stats-and-the-3-mobile-trends-to-watch http://www.webpronews.com/apple-earnings-show-iphones-sold-faster-than-babies-are-born-2012-01v http://techcrunch.com/2012/02/14/the-number-of-mobile-devices-will-exceed-worlds-population-by-2012-other-shocking-figures/ http://thedroidguy.com/2012/09/google-reaches-1-3-million-device-activations-per-day/#h6thkQ8fMRilZ06b.99 http://memeburn.com/2012/07/things-you-might-not-know-about-cellphones-in-africa-video/ http://pewinternet.org/Reports/2012/Cell-Internet-Use-2012/Main-Findings/Cell-Internet-Use.aspx http://mobithinking.com/mobile-marketing-tools/latest-mobile-stats/afsubscribers http://mashable.com/2012/06/05/mobile-internet-global-reach/ Copyright: Nexus Studios 2012 •(•(* •
