THE LIFE AND TIMES OF BILL GATES NEARING THE BIG 60 Bill Gates celebrates his 59th birthday on October 28th, 2014. We all are aware of his major achievements to date in life but there's an awful lot we don't know about the elusive genius too. THE STORY SO FAR 1955 William Henry Gates III is born to Seattle attorney William Henry Gates Il and Mary Gates, a schoolteacher, University of Washington regent and chairwoman of United Way International. Gates is enrolled in the Lakeside School, one of a handful of schools in the US with a computer terminal at the time. He is two years junior to fellow student Paul Allen. Here both students develop a passion for computers and programming. 1968 1973 Gates enters Harvard as a pre-law major. He also takes classes in Mathematics and Economics. Gates and his old school friend Allen call MITS, the maker of the world's first personal computer, and offer to develop software for the MITS Altair. MITS accepts and buys the language for $3,000 plus royalties. During this time, they start to refer to their own venture as He becomes friends with a student living along the hall called Steve Ballmer. 1975 Micro Soft or Micro-Soft. MICROSOFT. WINDOWS. 1976 Gates and Allen register the trademark "Microsoft." Gates sets up Microsoft in Albuquerque, N.M., where MITS is headquartered. 1977 Microsoft's year-end sales exceed $1 million. 1978 Gates agrees to produce the operating system for the personal computer being developed by IBM. Microsoft retains the right to license the operating system (MS-DOS) to other computer 1980 manufacturers. Gates hires his old Harvard friend Steve Ballmer as the company's first business manager. Microsoft's revenues reach $16m. The company employs 128 people. 1981 Allen leaves Microsoft after developing Hodgkin's 1983 disease. Microsoft announces Windows as an extension of its MS-DOS operating system. At age 31, Gates becomes the youngest billionaire ever. 1987 Microsoft Office 1989 Microsoft Office is released. Gates marries Melinda French, a Microsoft employee. 1994 TAIENT OF JUS Forbes declares Gates the richest man in the 1995 world with a fortune of $12.9 billion. Microsoft introduces Internet Explorer to the world, as part of Windows 95. In May, the U.S. Justice Department charges Microsoft with engaging in anticompetitive and exclusionary practices designed to maintain its monopoly in personal computer operating systems and to extend that monopoly to Internet browsing software. 1998 Gates Foundation Gates steps down as CEO of Microsoft. Gates' right-hand man Steve Ballmer takes over, while Gates becomes chief software architect. The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation 2000 is formed – a charitable organisation intended to reduce inequalities in the United States and around the world. Gates announces that his role as an executive at Microsoft will be phased out over the following two years. His intention, he says, is to spend more time working with The Bill & Melinda Gates 2006 Gates retires from day-to-day duties at Microsoft, but stays in the role of chairman and adviser on important development projects.
