Are Digital Teams Fundamental to Digital Good?

Highlights from the world's first benchmark report on non-profit digital teams In our nearly two decades experience working for social change institutions we've found that it is well led, well structured, and well-resourced digital teams that are the fundamental building block for sustainable success online. Are digital teams fundamental to DIGITAL GOOD? Communicopia gathered data from 67 senior level staff who run digital departments in non-profits and combined this with our own insights & analysis to help start a conversation in our sector about building better teams. Here are some highlights. communicopia The Basics: Who is your digital team? FUNDRAISING & OTHER COMMUNICATIONS MARKETING DIGITAL FULL-TIME CONTRACTOR SOCIAL MEDIA | STRATEGY |CONTENT/WRITING | PROJECT MGMT Nearly 45% of teams report to Communications, with a surprisingly high 18% reporting directly to the Executive Director. Most teams are small. And they use a lot of outside help. Mid-sized teams of 6-1o people use an average of 8 full time equivalent external contractors. The most common roles are social media, strategy, content creation & project management. Few teams have user-experience or research skills in-house. How are existing team structures working? POOR STRATEGICALLY-LED Over half (53%) of respondents report their team structures are working but need improvement, with another 15% reporting a poor structure holding performance back. Only 32% report appropriate structures for the demands on their teams. 28% of teams report their culture as strategically-led, SATISFACTORY SOMEWHAT with another 50% reporting a somewhat pro-active culture. PRO-ACTIVE NEEDS IMPROVEMENT What is holding digital teams back? 88% of respondents said their teams probably or completely lack people required to do their best work. 74% reported their teams lacked the right skills to do their best work. 71% reported their programs are underfunded or significantly under-funded. 55 reported their programs are only "somewhat effective". 9% are ineffective.
