Worker's Comp Claim Analysis

BODY PART The most common body part injured was the back; this is a common injury in construction and everyday life. Back injuries can be greatly reduced with proper stretching and lifting techniques. Eye injuries always seem to be a major concern on construction projects; these could also be easily prevented with eye projection. We looked at a per claim cost for these injured body parts; some of the most costly injuries involved the leg ($35.6k), head ($44.8k), hip ($35.1k), and multiple body parts ($55.8k). As expected, an injury to any of these body parts usually involves a great deal of medical attention; this ex- plains the great expense per claim. CAUSE OF INJURY WORKERS' COMP CLAIM ANALYSIS - HI-RISE CONSTRUCTION PROJECTS (OCIP/CCIP'S) IN NYC The majority of wrap-up insurance programs have large deductibles for workers compen- sation and general liability claims, so controlling losses is key to a obtaining maximum re- sults, aka Saving Money. Here, we have collected and analyzed claims from 4 high-rise projects in New York. The most common cause of injury was slip/trip; this is something that usually can be prevented. We found that most of these incidents are a result of bad housekeeping; trash, tools, and other items must be cleared from the project site to prevent these accidents. Another injury cause we saw a lot of was lifting. In our analysis, the most costly per claim causes of injury were electrical shock ($70.9k), falls from higher and same levels ($46.8k & $47.7k), and being struck against ($34.7k). With the exception of Project D, the projects had an average incurred per claim cost around $10,000. Based on our data, the beginning of the work week was much more dangerous than the end. This does somewhat coincide with other research on this topic. We wanted to look into this, so we graphed both the reported work hours and the claims per month for each project. As you could imagine, claims do follow work hours; the more hours worked, the higher the chance that an accident occurs. Also, most claims occurred during the first half of construction; each project had a huge peak in claims around the beginning of the second quarter of construc- tion.
