Q ESSENTIAL BRANDING O STEPS FOR YOUR BUSINESS An often overlooked but crucial aspect of starting a business is defining and developing your brand from the get-go. In the spirit of new beginnings, 99designs has put together a branding checklist of exactly what to accomplish in order to kick-start your branding efforts! BRAINSTORM VEOAN WHAT YOUR OROANIC BRAND STANDS FOR Define your brand's mission. In 3 to 5 sentences, describe what your business hopes to accomplish for your customers and why. Every successful brand meets an ongoing need. What customer need inspired you to start a company? Determine your target audience. Who is your average customer? Think about their lifestyle and habits. What are their hobbies? What defines their family life? Are they leaders, facilitators or followers? Recognize your competitive advantage. What makes you different from your competitors? THINK ABOUT MOOD BOARD WHAT YOUR BRAND SHOULD LOOK LIKE Perform an online image search for logos in your industry, and become familiar with the common graphics your competition is using in their branding efforts. Which logos are most eye-catching? Which are forgettable? By researching competitors' logos you'll also ensure yours won't get lost in the crowd. PRO TIP Define your brand personality. If you were to describe your brand as a person, what characteristics would come to mind? Feminine or masculine? Trendy or traditional? Playful or serious? Loud or quiet? Young or mature? This will help your designer define the visual characteristics that should represent your brand. PRO TIP MENU CREATE CORE BRANDING ASSETS AND KEEP THEM CONSISTENT Create your logo. Work with a designer to decide on what fonts, colors and imagery will accurately represent your business's values and the characteristics outlined above. Be sure your logo fits in all formats, from the roadside billboard to the smartphone screen and wherever else your logo is likely to be seen. PRO TIP Get a website. Purchase your domain name and find resources to design and develop your site. Make sure your website's aesthetic is consistent with your brand personality and the visual elements you choose to represent your company (e.g. fonts. colors, imagery). PRO TIP Develop social media profiles. Choose 1-2 platforms to engage with customers and grow your brand awareness. Facebook, Twitter, and Pinterest are the largest social media platforms, and thus likely to reach the largest audience. PRO TIP 99 designs
