CELEBRATING 100 Years of GK GROUP The roots of GK Group date back to 1878 when Frank Kenning opened a hardware business in 1878 Clay Cross. Frank's son, George Kenning followed his father as head of the business and was quick to develop opportunities presented by the new motor trade. George Kenning 1927 1938- One of Sir George's biggest deals was in 1927 when for In 1938 Kennings Limited became a public company. £62,925 he bought the entire Morris factory production. After the Second World War, Kennings Limited grew rapidly. In 1950 there were fifty depots but by the time of Sir George's death in 1956, there were eighty. The business moved to its present premises in Chatsworth Road in 1966. Most Notable Acquisition: was of the London Austin distributor, Car Mart that held the Royal Warrant for supply to HM Queen and a BMC import and distribution operation in Zimbabwe, formerly Southern Rhodesia. Kenning Motor Group Achieved Great Horizontal Expansion In addition to operating over 100 petrol forecourts, Kenning Motor Group built the Motorway Service sites at Strensham M5 and Anderton M61 and had an Kenning Motor Group's former Head office at Manor Offices, Old Road, Chesterfield. extensive fuel distribution Company for Shell-Mex and BP. They renamed Kenning Motor Group to GK GROUP using their grandfather, George Kenning's initials. Two of the original three Directors, George and David Kenning, remain as the major shareholders and joint Chief Executives of GK Group Limited.
