THE HISTORY OF CONTENT MARKETING 1895 John Deere launched "The Furrow," a customer magazine with tips for making farming more profitable. The magazine now has a circulation of 1.5 million. 1988 Michelin published a guidebook for French Motorists to push the demand for automobiles. The company distributed 35,000 of the guides for free then started selling the books for profit. Jell-0 created a free recipe book full of delicious ways to use their product. They delivered the books door-to-door for free. 1982 Marvel and Hasbro joined forces and created the "Real American Hero" comic book and TV series based on the G.I. joe action figure. 1993 O'Reilly & Associates created the first commercial website. On their site they created a section "The Online Whole Internet Catalog." One year later Netscape Communications was created. 1998 Custom Publishing Council was born. 2001 Companies spent nearly $20 billion on content. 2001 Penton Custom Media started using the term "content marketing. 211 Coca-Cola released "Content 2020, A marketing plan that focused on branded storytelling as the center of their marketing strategy.
