How to Submit Backyard Poultry for a Necropsy To ship a dead bird from a backyard flock for necropsy, the following items are needed: SUPPLIES NEEDED K ICE PACK I DATE: ACK ICE PACK ICE PACI CONTENTS K ICE PACK ICKICE PACK ICE PACK ACK ICE PACK ICE PACACK ICE PA K ICE PACK ICE PACK CK ICE PACK ACK ICE PACK ICE PA KE PACK ICE PACK CE PACK CE PACK Completed Submission (2) Trash bags Cold packs, frozen (1) Ziploc bag form Bird's Absorbent Cardboard packaging material Packaging tape carcass box* *Preferably insulated PACKAGING INSTRUCTIONS 1. Download and print the lab submission form off their website. 2. Complete the submission form and place in a Ziploc type bag separate from the carcasS. 3. Place the bird 's carcass in a plastic trash bag and tightly seal the bag to prevent leakage. 4. Add frozen cold packs (NO ICE CUBES!) to a second plastic trash bag. 5. Place the bag containing the carcass into the bag with the cold packs and seal carefully to prevent leakage. 6. Add paper towels (or newspaper) to the box to absorb any moisture and prevent the box from getting soggy while in transit. 7. Put the Ziploc bag with the submission form in the box. 8. Seal the box with packaging tape and ship for Next Day delivery via FedEx, UPS, or similar overnight delivery service. IMPORTANT TIPS The bird's carcass may be kept refrigerated for no more than three days prior to shipment. Do not freeze the bird as freezing interferes with the necropsy examination. DO NOT send by the U.S. Postal Service. Packages must be shipped to arrive at the laboratory on a weekday.
