The History of The World's Greatest DOC SHOW CRUFTS From Corgis to Chihuahuas, for over 120 years, dogs and their owners have competed against each other in what is now the largest dog show on earth. But where did it all begin? CHARLES CRUFT FOUNDER OF CRUFTS Worked as general manager for a dog biscuit manufacturer and toured UK and international dog shows. Entries cross 1972 15,000 THE WINTER OF DISCONTENT 1974 Due to the enforcement of the three-day working week, Cruft's takes place under subdued lighting. During a rebrand, Cruft's changes to CRUFTS deciding that the apostrophe is no longer needed. 1979 EARES COURT 1978 OHPER EARLS COURT SMPEOLATE 914 becomes the new venue due to AGILITY FIRST DEMONSTRATED AT CRUFTS the increasing number of entries. 1982 1980 To accommodate the increasing numbers of dogs and spectators, the show is extended to FIRST OFFICIAL ACILITY COMPETITION THREE DAYS 1985 1987 The Kennel Club Junior Organisation is launched. YOUNG HENNEL CLUB (YWC) Due to further increases in the number of dogs and spectators, the show is extended to FOUR DAYS 1988 1990 Crufts becomes the most popular show tô be held at Earls Court, with more than 110,000 PEOPLE ATTENDING FLYBALL FIRST DEMONSTRATED 1991 Flyball is a dog sport where teams of dogs compete in a relay-style race from a start/finish line, over hurdles, to retrieve a tennis ball, then back to their handlers. CRUFTS CENTENARY SHOW Show moves from London for the first time to the Birmingham National Exhibition Centre Officially recognised by The Guinness Book of Records as the world's largest dog show. 1992 A regular performer at the event, 1994 MARY RAY first demonstrates her fast-moving Heelwork to Music routine. Discover Dogs area is introduced to encourage responsible dog ownership; visitors to the show can discover more about the different breeds. 2000 2000 2001 HESCUE Due to Foot and Mouth disease, Crufts is moved from March to May. RESCUE DOG AGILITY INTRODUCED TO THE SHOW The International Agility Competition takes place for the first time. 2007 2004 For the first time, the Arena is used for Agility, Friends for Life and Best in Show competitions. The popular Friends for Life Competition first appeared, then called Hero Dogs. The competition recognises a dog's bravery, support and companionship. Dogs must compete against every other dog in their breed and group categories. The number of dog breeds varies, but they are all placed into 7 different groups TOYS GUNDOGS UTILITY HOUND WORKING PASTORAL TERRIERS JOURNEY OF THE WINNER OF BEST IN SHOW WIN AGAINST DOGS OF THE SAME BREED QUAUFY FOR CRUFTS Each breed of dog competes on levels split by gender, age To qualify for Crufts, dogs must have successfully competed at a Kennel Club licensed Championship show and previous class wins WIN BEST OF BREED WIN BEST IN CROUP Winners of the breed classes compete for the Dog Winners of each breed then compete and Bitch Challenge Certificate (CC). The two CC against other dogs in their group.
