ASIAN LONGHORNED BEETLE KILLING NEW YORK CITY TREES

LAST UPDATED JUNE 2010 ASIAN LONGHORNED BEETLES FROM WOOD PALLETS INVADING NYC! LEARN ABOUT THE PROBLEM AND HELP ERADICATE THE BEETLES. The Asian longhorned beetle (Anoplophora glabripennis) poses a serious threat to hardwood trees. It kills New York City trees by boring into trunks and branches and has no known natural predator in the United States. If the beetle becomes established nationwide, it could cause more damage than Dutch elm disease, chestnut blight, and the gypsy moth combined. THE ASIAN LONGHORNED BEETLE IN NEW YORK CITY The Asian longhorned beetle probably arrived in New York from its native China via untreated packing crates and wooden pallets. Infestations have been discovered in Brooklyn, Queens, and Manhattan. Other infested areas include parts of Long Island, Chicago, Jersey City, and Toronto, Canada. The successful eradication of the beetle depends on early detection of infestation and rapid tree removal. 1 Inspect Your Trees and Wood Products Beetles attack wood pallets, hardwood trees, including maples, birch, horsechestnut, poplar, willow, ash, and London planetr ees. 2 Report Beetle Sightings and Infestations Look for Large (/2 inch) round holes on the branches or the trunk, created when adult beetles emerge from the tree in the spring and summer. Properly Discard Wood Products & Trees Call 3-1-1 to schedule chipping of tree debris Currently, the only effective means to control the Asian longhorned beetle is to remove infested trees and destroy them through chipping and burning. Also, piles of sawdust accumulating at the base of trees or where branches meet the trunk, caused by beetles exiting from inside the trees. The successful eradication of the beetle depends on early detection of infestation and rapid tree removal.
