HEAD INJURIES, THE NFL, & WORKERS' COMPENSATION NFL players are worried that head injuries sustained during their professional careers caused long-term damage. WORKERS COMPENSATION In light of recent research and several high profile incidents involving head injuries, the NFL and its teams are worried about the future viability of the American Football League. As an employer, the teams and the NFL pay substantial sums of money to insure the health and safety of their workers, the players. Potential settlement costs could be astronomical- potentially high enough to put the league out of business. To make matters worse some players who sustained head injuries on-the-job signed contracts that specifically excluded them from workers' compensation benefits. Many players' "job-related" injuries are potentially eligible for workers' compensation benefits. The NFL and its teams are employers and stand to suffer significant financial losses if the players/ employees and their families are successful in their lawsuits. LAWSUITS Former players and their families are suing the NFL for not doing more to protect them from head injuries. Furthermore, they are alleging that the NFL knew about the dangers of concussions but hid information from players. CONSEQUENCES Workers' compensation costs could put the NFL out of business The cost of insuring players and teams could increase exponentially The rules of the game could change and the NFL could lose fans & revenue CONCUSSIONS Several thousand lawsuits have been filed by former players against the teams they played for and the NFL. While some of these claims are for other injuries, many are for head injuries and concussions. СТЕ CHRONIC TRAUMATIC ENCEPHALOPATHY is the subject of a number of lawsuits by former NFL players who claim that the NFL did not do enough to prevent and treat concussions. To determine the cause of head injuries in the NFL, 3400 ex-NFL players were surveyed. Players were divided into two groups based on the position they played: 大 RA VS. SPEED NON-SPEED ENDS LINEMEN KICK-OFF RUNNERS FACT: Players in speed positions were more likely to suffer from neurological degenerative diseases. The NFL and the teams' employers will suffer financial losses because of the outstanding number of injuries. 62% ..of athletic injuries occur during practice. 920,000 PLAYERS ..under the age of 18 were treated in emergency rooms for injuries in 2007. 2-3 MILLION ...young athletes suffer concussions each year. The NFL is working to make the game safer and reduce the number of concussions. АСTION They are changing some rules by moving the kickoff to reduce the likelihood of head injuries during run backs. DEDICATION NFL teams have provided the National Institutes of Health with a $30 million grant to study Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy (CTE). PREVENTION They have partnered with the National Institutes of Health, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and others. AWARENESS They have also promoted a "heads up" movement that focuses on teaching young players how to tackle safely.
