HEAD INJURIES, THE NFL, & WORKERS' COMPENSATION NFL players are worried that head injuries sustained during their professional careers caused long-term damage. WORKERS COMPENSATION In light of recent research and several high profile incidents involving head injuries, the NFL and its teams are worried about the future viability of the American Football League. As an employer, the teams and the NFL pay substantial sums of money to insure the health and safety of their workers, the players. Potential settlement costs could be astronomical- potentially high enough to put the league out of business. To make matters worse some players who sustained head injuries on-the-job signed contracts that specifically excluded them from workers' compensation benefits. Many players' "job-related" injuries are potentially eligible for workers' compensation benefits. The NFL and its teams are employers and stand to suffer significant financial losses if the players/ employees and their families are successful in their lawsuits. LAWSUITS Former players and their families are suing the NFL for not doing more to protect them from head injuries. Furthermore, they are alleging that the NFL knew about the dangers of concussions but hid information from players.
