The Birth of the Holiday greeting card Sir Henry Cole An English civil servant and inventor in London, commissioned the firt commercial Christmas cards in 1843. Sending commercial business cards dates back to the 18th century, an ancestor of the modern Christ- mas card. O Hanukkah & Hanukkah, or the Festival of lights, begins on the 25th day of the Jewish month of kislev, and lasts for eight days and eight nights. This year, Hanukkah will be from December 6 to December 14. DREIDEL A favorite Hanukkah game is spinning the dreidel - a 4-sided top with a hebrew letter on each side. The four symbols: nun, gimmel, hey, shin mean "A Great Miracle Happened there." THE MENORAH The menorah can be any size and made of any material. The middle candle, "Shamash", is the helper candle that is used to light the other eight candles. One candle is added each of the eight nights of Hanukkah. Candles are placed in the menorah from right to left and then lit from left to right. CELEBRATIONS AND TRADITIONS Food: it is customary to eat foods fried in oil like Latkes (similar to potato pancakes) and Sufganiyot (similar to jelly-filled doughnuts). Presents: On the jewish calendar, Hanukkah is cosidered a minor holiday. It has only re- cently become a gift-giving holiday due to the proximity to Christmas.
