Car Seat Cheat Sheet

CAR SEATS DEMYSTIFIED Rear-facing, forward-facing & booster seats: when to use what – and why. Car crashes are the leading cause of death for children older than three years and more than 140,000 children are treated in emergency rooms after car crashes every year, but studies show that most children in the U.S. aren't riding in age-appropriate car seats. Emergency #14 Ages O to 2+ Rear-Facing Seats should be used by children from infancy until at least the age of two, and ideally until they exceed the height or weight limits for their convertible car seat. Children riding rear-facing are FIVE TIMES safer than children riding forward-facing. Rear-Facing Ages 2 to 4+ Forward-Facing Seats with a five-point harness should be used by children over the age of two who are too tall or too heavy to remain rear-facing. Children should remain in a 5-point harness until they exceed a seat's height or weight limit. Front-Facing 40 Ibs Ages 4 to 8+ and Booster Seats can be used by children who weigh at least 40 pounds and are roughly 4 years old. Using a booster seat rather than a seat belt alone in children between the ages of 4 to 8 will reduce a child's risk of injury by 59 percent. Booster Seat Belt Only Around ages 8 to 12 and about 4'9" Kids should remain in a booster seat until the seat belt fits them properly (the top belt crosses the shoulder between the neck and arm, and the lap belt is as low as possible, touching the thighs) and they can sit with their back against the seatback and their knees bent over the vehicle's seat cushion. For most children, this typically occurs when they have reached 4 feet 9 inches in height and are between 8 and 12 years of age. Seat Belt %23
