He built a tavern near the intersection of Peachtree and Paces Ferry. After Irby killed a large deer and mounted the large "buck head" in the tavern, it came to be known as "Buckhead". Irby's Buckhead tavern became the stopping place for wilderness travelers and gradually a community was formed. THE OTTLEY ESTATE In the Late 19th century. Buckhead's pottery industry began to develop thanks to high quality clarin the area. 1897 John K. Ottley, president of First National Bank, bought 150 acres of Buckhead for only $1,816.48. He later used this land to build a large estate. BUCKHEAD TROLLEY Around the turn of the century, Buck- head became the site of summer cottages for Atlanta's wealthy 1907 The trolley from downtown Atlanta is expanded to Buckhead, citizens. making the area much more accessible to Atlanta residents. RESIDENTIAL GROWTH 1920's -1930's Advancements in transportation stimulated significant growth in Buckhead. The community fostered large estates and residential neighborhoods, including the subdivision of Peachtree Heights Park, Garden Hills and Brookwood Hills, In 1930 the Buckhead Theater opened. It 1952 became a social and entertainment hub in the Buckhead was annexed into the city of Atlanta. New residents and community for the next tuo decades. businesses migrated into the area, creating a bustling center within the city limits of Atlanta, In 1956, the SAMUEL ROBERTS NOBLE FOUNDATION purchased the Ottley estate and tore down the man- sion on the property to make way for Lenox Square Mall, the largest shop- ping center in the Southeast. THE BUCKHEAD SKYLINE fLoren In 1974, Buckhead's first skyscraper -Tower Place- 1960's was constructed. Low and mid-rise office buildings began to appear in Buckhead. Today, Buckhead has over 50 high-rise buildings, almost one-third of the city of Atlanta's total. Buckhead is now considered a major commercial and financial center. It is home to the ninth-wealthiest zip code in the US and is the location of the wealthiest of Atlanta's neighborhoods. In the heart of Buckhead, right on Peachtree Road, is a shopping district with more than 1,400 retail units where shoppers spend more than $1 billion a year.
