1983 - the Domain Name System (DNS) was written by Jon Postel, Paul Mockapetris, and Craig Partridge. The term 'cyberspace' is coined by William Gibson and symbolic.com becomes the world's first registered domain name. Four more nodes were installed at Stanford, the University of Utah, BBN, and the University of California, Santa Barbara. In 1972 the first email programs were written by Ray Tomlinson at BBN - SNDMSG and READMAIL. The @ symbol was chosen for its 'at meaning. Within a year the first ARPANET international connections would be established. By 1986 there are 5000 hosts on the ARPANET system, set to double in the following year. Cisco ships its first router in 1987; by 1989 there are 100,000 hosts - ARPANET is shut down and Berners-Lee goes on to create the modern Web at CERN in Geneva. The Story so Far This timeline starts at 1990, conveniently cutting out about 30 years of intense research and development which laid the foundations for the Internet and everything thereafter. I'm Just Browsing, Thanks The Internet and the World Wide Web have indisputably changed the course of history; these two inventions form the basis of an integral part of life for many millions of people. We can catch up with friends, go shopping, play games, watch movies and share virtually anything with people we know - not to mention access to a wealth of knowledge (and cat photos) hitherto incomprehensible - from the comfort of our own desk, chair or bed. The process started in 1958 when President Eisenhower requested funds to set up ARPA (Advanced Research Projects Agency). A few years later, Len Kleinrock authored the world's first paper on packet switching, closely followed by J.C.R. Licklider & W. Clark's paper on the 'Internet Concept', In 1974, Vint Cerf and Bob Kahn publish "A Protocol for Packet Network Interconnection," which details the design of TCP (soon to be known as TCP/IP). Two years later, Apple computers is founded and Vint Cerf joins ARPA as a program manager. Tim Berners-Lee writes a small program titled 'Enquire Within', as a Two years later the term 'surf' is first used in conjunction with the Internet. in 1993, InterNic is set up, and the web grows by upwards of 300,000% in a year. The overlooked, underappreciated heroes of all this are the web browsers. For the majority of Internet users, their browser is the gateway to the web, going so far as earning the title 'my Internet'. In 1965, experimentation at ARPA began in earnest with Larry Roberts acting as chief scientist. By 1969 there was at least one ARPANET node installed at UCLA Network Measurement Center. precursor to the World Wide Web.
