However, experts are concerned by how many of the players are dying young and suffering from health related 23 ailments. Age Position Team Player Reason for Death Year of Death The Scripps Howard Study investigated the deaths of 3,850 pro-football players born since 1905. Of the 130 players who died before age 50, the study found: 28% of all pro-football players born in the last century who qualified as obese, died before their 50th birthday, Today, 56% of all players on NFL rosters are cat- egorized as obese. One of every 69 players born since 1955 is now dead. 77% of those who died of heart diseases qualified as obese, even during their careers. The average weight in the NFL has grown by 10% since 1985, to a current average of 248 pounds. 22% died of heart diseases.
