Winners of the PEJ Economist Infographic Challenge

published on December 5, 2012 in Data

With Visually’s help, The Economist Group and the Pew Research Center’s Project for Excellence in Journalism (PEJ) put on an infographic challenge.

The judging was done based on five categories:

  • How creatively the data was used.
  • How easy the graphic is to understand.
  • How aesthetically pleasing the graphic is.
  • The designer’s adherence to visualization best practices.

There were a bunch of great submissions, and we’d like to heartily thank everyone who participated. Judging is finally done, so on to the winners!

Jen Lebeau and Amy Li are masters at combining crisp clean graphic design with visualizations that communicate clearly. Their submission does a great job of addressing issues in the data, and showing them clearly.

Damage (Máriusz Bari) brings a unique style to infographics in his joint submission with Tablet2Cases. The piece’s “whimsical victorian” theme contrasts well with the crisp newness of tablets.

ElkanoData‘s submission doesn’t actually contain any visualizations of the data itself, but it does a great job of visually taking the viewer through a story.

ElkanoData also went above and beyond, and created this motion graphic after they learned they won.

In addition to the designers who submitted entries, there was also a class of students who submitted from West Virginia University’s Visual Journalism class. We’d really like to encourage future contest participation by classes, so we also selected a winner from the class submissions.

Brittany Furbee‘s submission was the cleanest graphic telling the best story, and had a great overall sense of layout and visual hierarchy.
