About Garifuna in Belize

ABOUT GARIFUNA IN BELIZE * There are about 500,000 Garinagu worldwide. * About 15,000 Garinagu are found in Belize; That makes up 7% of their total population. * They arrived in Belize, which was known as British Honduras back then, on November 19, 1802. * Since 1943 all Belizeans Celebrate Nov. 19 19 as a public and bank holiday. * Garifuna music consist of Punta, Punta Rock and Paranda. Punta is very famous in all Central America including other parts of the world. MORE INFORMATION Traditional Garifuna foods are based around fish, chicken, cassava, bananas, and plantains. The Garifuna's biggest contribution to Belize is through music. Drums are among the popular instruments used by the Garifunas.
