2011 eCommerce Year in Review

More than a third of all online display ads in the U.S. appeared on Facebook in 2011 ..........•.... > Major brands are still investing in social commerce - P&G opened 6 branded Facebook stores in the summer of 2011. 22% of Facebook users would consider social media buying within Facebook if they knew and trusted the brand. > DOUBLE-DIGIT GROWTH SALE eCommerce sales have seen consistent double-digit growth throughout 2011 - sales increased by 12% ($38 billion) in the first quarter, 14% ($37.5 billion) in the second quarter, and 13% (S36.3 billion) in the third quarter. > RECORD SETTING HOLIDAY SEASON It was a record setting holiday season with 2011 holiday sales up 15% from last year and Cyber Monday reaching a single day record of $1.25 billion in sales. SMARTPHONE POPULATION RISES mobile Mobile commerce and smartphone usage continued to increase in 2011, with third quarter smartphone ownership up 12% from the previous year. The Android operating system also surpassed Apple's ioS in popularity. ECOMMERCE IN THE SUBWAYS P&G is testing eCommerce in the subways in Prague, where consumers can use their smartphones to order products via QR codes. After products are ordered they are dispatched directly to the consumer's home. > SECURITY BREACH Major security breaches occurred in 2011 - Citi had 200,000 credit card accounts compromised and Sony had 75 million PlayStation accounts stolen, many with credit card information. > ENHANCED SECURITY The U.S. Department of Commerce may implement a system which would give U.S. citizens a unique online identifier to enhance personal security. proposed system would be used initially for taxes and storing health information. security global EUROPE'S BIGGEST INTERNET MARKET Russia overtook Germany as Europe's biggest internet market in 2011. However, slow product delivery times due to dated transportation has restricted eCommerce growth to primarily urban areas of the country. > 2.7 HOURS A DAY Chinese internet users now spend an average of 2.7 hours a day online, the second most of any country in the world (behind Japan). They are also more likely to publish blogs/websites and post ratings/reviews than U.S internet users. > FREE SHIPPING & INSTALLMENT PAYMENTS Due to the geographic size of Brazil services and offers such as free shipping are now increasingly based on location. Installment payments on simple items such as toasters and video games are also prevalent in Brazil. > OVER 50% SHOP ONLINE Japan is still recovering from the earthquake which rocked their country in the beginning of 2011 and has seen a decline in online revenue this year. Don't doubt Japan though, they are one of the most tech-affluent countries in the world with more than half of their population shopping online in 2011. IN-PERSON CASH PAYMENTS Over the past twelve months more online retailers in India now take orders online and deliver products in-person for cash payments at the consumer's door. With only 13% of the population owning credit cards this tactic is making eCommerce more accessible throughout the country. multichannel > 4 HOUR IN-STORE PICK-UP Ordering online to pick-up products in-store is growing in popularity with major retailers. Stores such as Wal-Mart are cutting the lead time from online orders to availability in-store down to only four hours. ....0.. ............. > ECOMMERCE “POP-UP" STORES More eCommerce “pop-up" stores are appearing - these stores feature computers where consumers can shop online in places such as malls and shopping centers.
