2010 Year in Review

2010 YEAR IN REVIEW Disaster, Disclosure Discovery As most years are, 2010 was filled with moving stories of joy, misfortune, and perseverance. Unlike any year, continuing advancements in technology and social media made the biggest stories even bigger. More than ever, events like Haiti's devastating earthquake, the thrilling rescue of the Chilean miners and the lingering Gulf oil spill turned into shared global experiences. Jan. 12: A 7.0-magnitude earthquake strikes Haiti's capital, killing as many as 300,000 people. March: News of alleged sexual abuse by Catholic clergy and church workers breaks around the world. April 14: A large area of European airspace closes due to ash from an Icelandic volcano. EstAMOs Biev EN EL REfugio los 33 July: Heavy monsoon rains trigger floods that run the length of Pakistan, affecting 20 million people. Aug. 5: Thirty-three miners are trapped San Jose mine, Chile. They were rescued alive on Oct. 13. Nov. 28: The release of U.S diplomatic cables by the group WikiLeaks sparks global angst. Nov. 23: North Korea shells a South Korean island that lies near the disputed maritime border, elevating tensions. April 20: An oil rig explodes and sinks, killing 11 men. BP takes 16 weeks to seal the rupture. An estimated 4.9 million barrels of oil spills into the Gulf of Mexico. September: NBA free agency ends with Chris Bosh, LeBron James and Dwyane Wade all signing with the Miami Heat. Nov. 1: San Francisco Giants win the World Series against Texas Rangers. July 12: Roman Polanski is declared a free man after Swiss authorities rejected a U.S. request for his extradition because of a 32-year-old sex conviction. Jan. 15: Longest annular solar eclipse of the entire Second Millennium. May 20: Scientists produce a living cell powered by manmade DNA. April 23: Sandra Bullock files for divorce from Jesse James. Sept. 24: Lindsay Lohan returns to jail with no bail after a failed drug test but is freed days later and ordered to rehab. July 8: An experimental Swiss solar-powered plane completes its first 24-hour test flight successfully. Nov. 17.: Physicists at CERN trap 38 anti-hydrogen atoms for more than a tenth of a second. It is the first time antimatter has been captured. May 8: Betty White hosts SNL after a half-million-strong groundswell on Facebook.
