Yaz AND YASMIN LAWSUITS In 2009, a study was published which found that women taking drospirenone faced a 6.3-fold increased risk of venous thrombosis compared to women taking no birth control. Bayer has set aside $24 million to settle claims from women who have suffered gall bladder damage or have had to have their gall bladders removed because of Yasmin or Yaz. VENOUS THFOMBOSIS $24 MILLION TO SETTL E CLAIMS Another study done in 2011 of 1.3 million women had found that women taking drospirenone faced "at least twice the risk of venous thromboembolism" compared to women taking levonorgestrel. In 2012, Bayer settled 3,490 cases for about $750 million. The FDA received 22,871 adverse event reports. Among these reports were 8,310 hospitalizations. Serious side effects that were reported include 3,714 cases of pulmonary embolism, 3,050 cases of deep vein thrombosis, and 3,015 cases of gallbladder disorder.
