A WORL D OF WIRE Major and notable world wire and cable advances, usage, and applications compiled by The Eraser Co mpany. CABLES AND WIRES HOLD THE WORLD TOGETHER The Golden Gate Bridge The Golden Gate Bridge uses the largest bridge cables ever made -- long enough to encircle the world more than three times at the equator. The cables are made from more than 27, 500 strands of wire, and there are more than 80,000 miles of wire that make up the two main cables. Wire in Automobiles According to the Copper Development Association, a typical automobile that is built in the United States includes approximately 50 pounds of copper. Each car contains approximately 1,500 copper wires which, if laid end to end, would stretch nearly 1 mile. Longest Telephone Cable The longest telephone cable is a submarine cable called fiber optic link around the globe. It is length is 16,800 miles and spans from the United Kingdom to Japan and has the capability to carry 600.000 calls at a time, Copper Conductivity Copper conducts electricity better than any other metal except silver, and copper used for electrical wire is typically refined to at least 99.98 percent purity. Wire at Home There are approximately 195 pounds of copper electrical wire in the average new home con- structed in 2010. This does not include the amount of copper wiring that goes into home appli- ances, plumbing and air- conditioning systems. Wire in the Pentagon One of the world's largest office buildings, the U.S. Pentagon uses 100,000 miles of telephone wiring in order to accommodate some 200,000 phone calls made each day. Recycled Wire The U.S.Geological Survey notes that recycled copper from all sources accounts for nearly one-third of the copper supply in the United States. The Thinnest Wire The thinnest wire in the world is 10,000 times thinner than the human hair, has the same capacity to con- duct electricity as traditional copper wire.
