The four most common eye diseases causing blindness and partial sight in Canada are: Age-Related Macular Diabetic Retinopathy Glaucoma Cataracts Degeneration (AMD) 2.5 million Canadians 1 million 500,000 live with diabetic have some form of live with AMD cataract retinopathy 250,000 canadians live with glaucoma -YET ONLY HALF ARE AWARE THEY HAVE THE DISEASE. THE GLOBAL RESPONSE TO PREVENT BLINDNESS With today's knowledge and technology up to 80% of global blindness is preventable or treatable. Cost effective interventions are available for the major causes of avoidable blindness. The number of people visually impaired from infectious diseases has reduced in the last 20 years according to global estimates. THE FUTURE OF VISION TECHNOLOGY Glaucoma Implant: Scientists have proposed a way to monitor glaucoma using a tiny device implanted in the eye. Readings from the device could be monitored by a smartphone. The technology could help prevent some people from going blind. The user completes visual exercises specifically designed to assess how well his or her brain's visual system is able to react to certain cues. O After a trial on a university baseball team the distance which they could see clearly grew by 31% SELECTIVE LASER TRABULECTOMY ULTIMEYES Laser energy is applied to the drainage tissue in the eye that results in better drainage of fluid through the drain and out of the eye. SLT lowers the intraocular pressure by about 30% when used as initial therapy. The effect will generally last between 1-5 years, and in rare cases, longer than that.
