Women Nerd Heroes

WOMEN NERD HEROES Technical excellence and talent are to be admired, but those who have special strength and courage to overcome cultural pressures and have positively impacted their communities belong to a different class – heroes. This is the first in a series to recognize individuals who have altered history with their contributions to the technology community. ANITA BORG (1949-2003) Computer scientist and founder of the Institute of Women and Technology, now an international advocacy organization Built an online community called Systers for women technologists in 1987, well before the concept was mainstream. Appointed to the U.S. Presidential Commission on the Advancement of Women and Minorities in Science Engineering and Technology. Holds a Ph.D. in computer science from the Courant Institute at New York University. ANGELA BYRON (1977 - ) Software developer and evangelist for the Open Source and Drupal movements Led and encouraged women to become involved in open source community. First woman to be featured on the cover of Linux Journal, in April 2011. • Director of Community Development for Acquia, a software company that provides products and services for Drupal. REAR ADMIRAL GRACE MURRAY HOPPER (1906 – 1992) Early female computer programmer and US military leader C:\ Developed COBOL (Common Business-Oriented Language). First woman to reach the rank of Admiral in the U.S. Navy. Guided missile destroyer The USS Hopper (DDG-70) is named in her honor. First woman to earn a PhD in mathematics from Yale. MARY LOU JEPSEN (1965-) Founder and CTO of the non-profit, open source One Laptop Per Child, a global program to provide children laptops for $100 In 1989, co-created the world's first holographic video system. Founder of Pixel Qi, which builds low-power displays for mobile devices. RADIA PERLMAN (1951-) Software designer and network engineer, known as the mother of the internet for her invention of internet routing and bridging protocols Pioneer for teaching computer programming and developing materials for children. Holds more than 50 patents from Sun Microsystems Inc. Holds a BS and MA in Mathematics, and PhD in Computer Science, all from MIT. JANIE TSAO (1955 - ) Taiwanese immigrant and programmer who cofounded Linksys with her husband from their garage. Linksys later become the leader in wireless and networking hardware for retail and e-commerce • In April 2003, Cisco Systems acquired Linksys, establishing it as an operating division with Janie and her husband in executive management roles. • In 2004, the Tsaos were named "Entrepreneur of the Year" by Inc.
