Why It's So Crucial To Dispose of Medical Waste Properly: Autoclave The Best Technique

Why It's So Crucial To Dispose of Medical Waste Properly Autoclave: The Best Technique Why Is Proper Disposal Crucial? Answer: Biohazard waste can include everything from syringes to body tissue, and improper medical waste removal can result in the transmission of viruses and other harmful microorganisms The World Health Organization estimates that contaminated syringes alone, in recent years, have caused the following: 21 million Hepatitis B infections 2 million Hepatitis C infections 260,000 HIV Infections The Current Techniques For Medical Waste Removal The techniques used today in medical waste management vary. The idea behind the disposal is to kill off all of the harmful microorganisms present, and dispose of the physical material properly. These techniques have their pros and cons, but as you will see, some methods leave behind more of a footprint. Some of the most common techniques that medical waste management companies use are as follows: #1 - Incineration Definition: Incineration is the burning of medical waste until it becomes ash Why It's Not The Best Method For Disposal Carcinogenic smoke is created in this incineration that seriously pollutes the environment. Studies have shown that adults and children that live in a 5 mile radius of these incinerators have increased cancer risks. Birth defects are also higher in these areas too. #2 - Chemical Disinfection Definition: The process by which companies use chemicals to kill and remove harmful microorganisms from the waste Why It's Not The Best Method For Disposal Although this method does not create smoke, it does result in other environmental hazards, such as these chemicals getting into drinking water and the ecosystem. #3 - The Autoclave Definition: A newer method in which waste contaminated with harmful microorganisms is sterilized before disposal using an immense amount of steam. The medical waste is put into the Autoclave machine, and the steam is then released. This steam is hot enough to kill all microorganisms. The sterilized material is then transported to a landfill and safely disposed of there. Why It's The Best Method For Disposal The benefit of this steam-based method is that there are no harmful environmental hazards associated with it. Steam is surely environmentally friendly-it's just H2O! After the Autoclave process the waste is now safe to transport to local landfills. The only disposal method with no associated environmental hazards The Autoclave Is Still Not The Most Used Method! Surprisingly, the Autoclave is still not the most commonly used technique due to how recently it was invented. However, if you're a healthcare practitioner or work in hospital management, it's important to research whether or not your current biohazard disposal company is using an Autoclave. This infographic was created by MedSharps to inform health care providers of the best biohazard waste removal methods.
