A Whole World of Water

A Whole World of Water Do you turn the water off in between rinses? And if not, have you ever thought about how much water people waste with such simple things and what the consequences are in the long run? You have? Well, think again! JT SPAS The average person in England and Wales uses 150 litres of water a day. By 202o the demand for water could increase by 800 million extra litres of water a day. 4.7 billion litres of water are lost each day because of leakage in supply pipes Most of this water is used for washing and toilet flushing, but it also includes drinking, cooking, car washing and watering the garden. We use almost 50 percent more water than 25 years ago, partly because of power showers and household appliances. ....... Each Briton uses 4,645 litres a day when hidden factors are included. When you brush your teeth, don't forget to turn the tap off in between rinses! Using water in our homes contributes to around 35 million tonnes of greenhouse gases a year Only 38% of the UK's total water use comes from its own resources; the rest depends on the water systems of other countries, some of which already face serious shortages. The average family uses 500 litres of water a day (due to some communal use of appliances). That's equal to 1.5 tonnes of greenhouse gases a year. Considering the average person typically flushes liquids four times more often than solids, dual-flush toilets can save up to69,000 litres of water per year for a family of four compared with a 13-litre toilet Average household water use for washing & drinking in the UK is about 150 litres a person daily, but we consume about 30 times as much in "virtual water" (used in the production of imported food and textiles) People in rich countries use ten times more water than people in poor countries. Even in poor countries the rich can use as much as several Taking virtual water into account, each of us soaks up to 4,645 litres a day hundreds of litres of water a day, and the poor have access to as little as 20 litres per person per day. A 5-min. green shower head A 5-min. normal shower uses - 6o litres A 5-min. power shower uses - 85 litres A full bath uses up to 80 litres. Don't forget a 4- minute shower is usually enough for a good wash. uses - 35 litres Only Brazil, Mexico, Japan, China and Italy come higher in the league of net importers of virtual agricultural water. People in poorer countries subsist on 1,000 litres of virtual water a day Around 700,000 children die every year from diarrhea caused by unsafe water and poor sanitation, that's almost 2,000 children a day A meat and dairy-based diet consumes about 5,000 litres of virtual water a day while a vegetarian diet uses about 2,000 litres. 783,000,000 people in the world don't have access to safe water. This is roughly one in ten of the population. 2.5 billion people don't have access to adequate sanitation, almost two fifths of the world's population. JT SPAS MAKING LUXURY AFFORDABLE

Each year we waste billions of litres of water, and our usage is increasing with every passing day. This graphic shows how water is used and what we can do to save more.
