The inventors you can thank for the stuff you wear every day. Who are you wearing? Knitted hat: William Lee In 1589, this English stocking maker invented the first knitting machine. Belt buckle: Roman soldiers Snap: Heribert Bauer Modern snap fasteners were first patented in 1885 as a trendy way to fasten men's trousers. The earliest buckles were used by ancient Roman soldiers to keep their armour on. Pants: Barthélemy Thimonnier This French tailor invented the first widely used sewing machine in 1829. Bicycle: John Kemp Starley John is credited with inventing the safety bicycle in 1885: the first modern bike.
