Where Have All the Healthy, Active Children Gone?

Childhood obesity is a leading public health issue in Canada. Approximately 1 in 3 Canadian children is considered overweight or obese. It is estimated that 80 per cent of these children could remain that way into adulthood. With the combined cost of obesity and physical inactivity already hovering at upwards of $9.6 billion in Canada, the socioeconomic consequences of a generation of overweight, inactive adults are easy to imagine. Childhood obesity rates in Canada have tripled over the past three decades. Canadian kids spend 7.48 hours per day in front of screens. 50 per cent of Canadian children are not active enough for optimal growth. Canadian children spend 62 per cent of their waking hours being sedentary. 51% in 2000 62% in 2010 58 per cent of Canadian parents indicate that they walked to school when they were kids, yet only 28 per cent of their children do so. The percentage of kids taking the bus or car to school increased from 51 per cent to 62 per cent between 2000 and 2010. 58 per cent of Canadian schools don't have a formal policy requiring consistent physical activity or sport participation for all students. Over four in ten Canadian children skip breakfast, placing them at greater risk for obesity, nutritional deficiencies, and other health problems.
