Guantanamo Bay, or “Gitmo” has been long-hailed as one of the United States dirtiest secrets. Prison camps can be a heavy subject, and few know the real terrors behind their walls – or the histo...
ry of their presence. www.infographicworld.com has created an infographic entitled “Where Does Gitmo Fit In? The Long, Winding History of Prison Camps”, delving into the bloody history of prison camps, and just how much they’re costing us today.
As long as we’ve been recording history, there have been prisoners of war. Even in the middle ages, the killing and enslavement of prisoners is looked down upon, in favor of ransoms and exchanges. This infographic takes us all the way to 2002, when Gitmo’s harsh reality came to light; and not just the reality of life inside its walls, but the financial toll it takes, as well.
In 2013, Gitmo cost the United States $454 million. Since 2002, Gitmo has cost the U.S. $5 billion. Where a federal prison system inmate costs $30,000 a year, a Gitmo inmate costs $3 million. 779 prisoners have been housed at Gitmo since 2002, with the youngest prisoner being 13 years old.
The infamous detainment center has also had a political impact, which is outlined in this infographic.
