WHEN TO SEE THE DOCTOR About Sprained Ankles, Concussions & Other Sports Injuries SPRAINED ANKLE See your doctor if: there is pain and swelling in the ankle but you can walk. Go to urgent care if: you are experiencing pain and swelling and can't walk without assistance. Go to the ER if: there is immediate bruising on the foot, deformity or you can't put pressure on the ankle. CONCUSSION See your doctor if: you have sustained a head injury and symptoms are mild. Go to urgent care if: you receive a concussion and are experiencing moderate but stable symptoms. Go to the ER if: you receive a concussion and display symptoms lasting longer than 30 seconds. KNEE INJURIES See your doctor if: you have minor knee pain. Go to urgent care if: the injury is severe and you are having trouble walking without assistance. Go to the ER if: you feel severe pain, and the knee is immobile, appears deformed or you have significant instability. PULLED HAMSTRING See your doctor if: you have heavy bruising on the back of the leg. Go to urgent care if: you are unable to walk without pain. Go to the ER if: you are unable to put weight on the leg or bend the knee, SHOULDER INJURIES See your doctor if: your shoulder is stiff and painful and daily activities are difficult.
