Celebrated as an energy revolution in the US, but sceptically regarded in Europe. During the last five years, shale gas has earned a prominent position in the US energy mix. On a global scale, shale gas could contribute to satisfy energy demands in the post-oil era. Used as a substitute for coal, it could help to reduce GHG emissions though it lags behind compared to other forms of energy production such as renewables or conventional gas.
