THE LOGISTICS OF THE WALL The Wall from George R.R. Martin's Game of Thrones is one of the 9 Wonders Made by Man, It forms the northern border of the Seven Kingdoms on the continent of Westeros. It is the second tallest structure in Westeros, exceeded in height only by the High Tower of Oldtown, but is by far the largest artificial structure known to exist in the world. To reach the top of the wall, Knights make use of a pulley system powered by a person standing at the base of The Wall. At a rate of 10cm/second it would take 40 minutes to reach the top of the wall using this system. The Wall is over eight thousand years old, and was built by Bran the Builder following the War for the Dawn. Once the demonic Others were turned away, humanity built The Wall, assisted by the Children of the Forest and giants, as a defensive bulwark against the Others' return. The Sworn Brotherhood of the Knight's Watch was founded to man the Wall and defend it against all threats from the North. The Wall is guarded by nineteen castles which act as garrisons for the Knight's Watch. Over the centuries, as manpower of the Watch has dropped, these castles have gradually been abandoned, until only three are currently inhabited: the ShadowTower near the western edge, Castle Black in the centre, and Eastwatch-by-the-Sea, where the Wall meets the sea. Although according to myth, spells are woven into The Wall to prevent it from collapsing from mundane causes and to keep certain entities, such as the Others, from passing. The myth also states that the Wall can only be destroyed by blowing the Horn of Winter, which Mance Rayder claimed to possess. This artifact has been destroyed by the men of Stannis Baratheon.
