A Walk Down Memory Lane: The History of Information Storage

A Walk Down Memory lane The History of Information Storage For ages, the only way to store important information was to write it down and put it somewhere safe or keep it locked away in the vast and mysterious landscape of the brain. Then, the Gilded Age of the late 19th century brought new fervor to invent contraptions to solve everyday problems. Soon enough the Information Age began in the mid-20th century, eventually bringing us computers, the Internet, and advanced information storage capability in the cloud. 1928 Magnetic Tape Fritz Pfleumer, a German engineer, patented magnetic tape in 1928. He based this invention off of the magnetic wire originally designed by Vlademar Poulsen. 1946 Williams Tube Professor Fredrick C. Williams and his colleagues developed 1948 Solectron Tube the first random access computer memory at the University of Manchester using a series of electrostatic cathode-ray The Radio Corporation of America (RCA) developed an tubes. early form of computer memory using a Solectron tube for high-speed data registry. -1949 Delay Line Memory 1956 Hard Disk This early form of computing would impart an information pattern into a delay path to generate a memory capacity of a few thousand bits with A hard disk implements rotating platters, which store and retrieve bits of digital information from a flat magnetic surface. recirculation times measured in microseconds. Idea of an “Intergalactic = 1962 Computer Network" Conceived J.C.R. Licklider formulated the earliest ideas of an "Intergalactic Computer Network," which is essentially contains the same principles as cloud computing. 1963 Music Tape The first audiocassettes were 1966 intended for dictation machines but DRAM soon became a popular method for distributing music to the masses. DRAM In 1966, Robert H. Dennard invented DRAM cells, which store bits of data as an electric charge 1980 compact Disk within a circuit for increased memory density capabilities. James T. Russell was the first to conceptualize the idea of using light to record and replay music. |1989 Years later, Russell successfully completed the design and presented it to Sony. DDS Digital Data Storage In 1989, Sony and Hewlett-Packard introduced the Digital Data Storage (DDS) format to store and back up computer data on magnetic tape. -1992 Mini Disk Sony was the first to introduce the MiniDisk digital storage technology that 1994 CompactFlash was intended to replace the audiocassette tape memory device. CompactFlash (CF) uses flash memory in an enclosed disc to save digital data and is most commonly used to store information in digital cameras. -1995 DVD DVDS became the next generation of digital disc storage and are credited with 1999 being a faster and bigger alternative to CDs for storing multimedia information. Web 2.0 "Web 2.0" was coined Darcy 2003 Blu-ray DiNucci and allowed users to interact and collaborate with each other as creators of a virtual community. This fueled the idea that the Internet could be used as a valuable tool as opposed to simply a medium for the passive viewing of content. Blu-ray allows us to store high-definition video and high-density data and is named for the blue-laser technology used to store and read large amounts of data. Today Cloud Computing Bringing more flexibility and security to information storage than anything before it, the cloud can be used for a range of personal computing needs, but is a vital tool for businesses in today's networked economy. The cloud is a shared infrastructure that offers a wide range of benefits, including built-in disaster recovery, secured and easy access to important information at any time, and improved efficiency in business processes and communication.
