The US Customs and Border Protection, and Immigration and Customs Enforcement conducted more than 22,800 seizures in 2012, netting goods worth nearly $1.3 billion. The CBP and ICE said close to one-third of actual seizures consisted of apparel and accessories. Handbags and wallets top the list when commodities are ranked according to value. About three-fourths of seized commodities by value came from China, despite efforts there to heighten IPR recognition and protection. Peru was ranked among the top 10 sources economies for the first time last year due to seizures worth almost $2 million. With these numbers in mind, precompliance and due diligence, including some IPR protection tips from the Customs & International Trade Law Blog, remain a must for volume importers. The infographic below presents key data on the 2012 IPR seizures by US customs.
