Uniting to Combat Neglected Tropical Diseases Ending the Neglect and Reaching 2020 Goals Neglected Tropical Diseases blight the lives of more than a billion people worldwide and threaten the health and productivity of millions more. These infectious diseases strike the world's most vulnerable populations - those without access to clean water, basic sanitation, or health care - making it difficult for these communities to lift themselves out of poverty, THE BURDEN 2 3 4 5 67 Number of NTDS Endemic per Country *** 1,400,000,000 1 in 3 worldwide is at risk for NTDS 1 in 6 already has one... of the world's poorest affected THE SOLUTION Previous and ongoing efforts by a number of partners have made substantial progress. Global Health Product Development Partnerships Pharmaceutical Donor Endemic Companies NGOS Organisations Countries .but significant gaps remain. New levels of collaboration are needed to reach 2020 WHO goals. In the past, partners working alone or in smaller partnerships made considerable progress in the fight against individual NTDS. By coming together and coordinating their efforts around a common goal, however, they can expand and accelerate this progress and deal these diseases a decisive blow, On 30 January 2012, a number of partners from the public and private spheres came together in London to launch the largest, coordinated effort against NTDS. By joining forces, they will enhance the supply of existing drugs, collaborate on research to produce new treatments, and increase funding needed to control or eliminate ten NTDS by 2020.
