UNDERSTANDING D*G B&DY LANGUAGE Dogs have five main emotional displays: relaxed,happy and play ful, aggressive, submissive, and fearful. RELAXED HAPPY/PLAYFUL Mouth slightly open, "smiling" Tail up and wagging Tail is low and loose Ears up, but not forw ard Head is up Front legs bent, head forward Loose, equally-distributed Eyes are bright & alert stance AGGRESSIVE SUBMISSIVE Tail is held vertical, trembling slightly Front legs rigid, leaning Little eye contact Rolls over to expose stomach Low, rapidly- wagging tail forward Licking at your face Dog holds intense eye contact Muzzle is wrinkled & teeth are barred SIGNS THAT AGGRESSIVE Ears facing forward BEHAVIOR IS IMMINENT: Unwavering eye contact • Tail is raised and stiff, may be wagging slightly • Ears up & facing forward • Wrinkled muzzle • Bared teeth •Growling or snarling • Showing the whites of the eyes FEARFUL Raised hackles • Stance that makes the dog look bigger Head down, hunched body Ears back, flat against the DOG DISPLAYS ANY OF head THESE SI GNS, HE OR SHE MAY Tail between the legs BE ABOUT TO BITE.
