Trespass Inside Knowledge: Waterproof Jackets

TRESPASS INSIDER KNOWLEDGE: WATERPROOF JACKETS WATERPROOFING EXPLAINED TP100 HHR 10,000mm waterproof HYDROSTATIC HEAD RATING TP75 The HHR rating shows the amount of pressure of water that would be needed to penetrate the fabric - so for example, if your jacket states 'waterproof to 5,000mm' it can hold back a column of water 5 2,000 - 5,000mm waterproof TP50 2,000mm waterproof metres long before the water would start to seep through. 1500mm minimum rating for water resistance HOW IS MATERIAL WATERPROOFED? A special coating (usually PU) is applied to the fabric. Rain droplets then form in large globules, on the outside of the jacket, which cannot pass through the waterproof coating or membrane. IT IS IMPORTANT TO REMEMBER THAT, USUALLY THE HIGHE R THE WATERPROOF RATING, THE HIGHER THE PRICE POINT. BREATHABILITY EXPLAINED IF THE FABRIC IS LETTING MOISTURE ESCAPE, THEN HOW CAN THE MATERIAL ALSO BE WATERPROOF? The rain droplets on the outside of the jacket form in large beads, which cannot pass through the membrane. On the inside, body moisture vapour that has built up, can easily escape through the fabric membrane as it is much smaller. MVP MVP is the amount of vapour which can be expelled through the fabric, when your body starts to sweat. MOISTURE VAPOUR PERMEABILITY TAPED SEAMS The stitching can be a weak point for water penetration. Taping the seams helps to improve the waterproof capability of the jacket, preventing water from entering through the stitching at the seams. TAPED SEAMS - THERMOPLASTIC TAPE APPLIED UNDER HEAT AND PRESSURE, OVER THE SEAMS. You can either have a jacket with fully taped seams (all seams covered) or critically taped seams (only the seams most susceptible to water exposure, usually chest and shoulders).
