TOYOTA Solar Array Toyota is the first UK car manufacturer to install a large-scale solar panel array. Toyota, in partnership with British Gas, has installed the facility in order to help reduce the production plant's carbon footprint, support energy security and reduce energy consumption. Here are the vital statistics. In total there are 17,000 solar panels in an area equivalent to 4.3 football pitches The array creates up to 4.6 million kWh energy per year enough to make 150 million cups of tea The solar array will save 2,000 tons of CO, per annum; That's the weight of 260 double decker buses The energy is enough to produce nearly 7,000 cars per annum More statistics about Burnaston The Burnaston facility was Toyota's first European plant and is one of only five Toyota plants worldwide to be designated a Sustainable Plant. Since it opened in 1993 Burnaston has achieved the following sutainability goals: 70% reduction in energy usage per vehicle (kWh) 70% reduction in water usage per vehicle (m3) 60% reduction in waste produced per vehicle (kg) 0% waste waste to landfill 0% waste waste to incineration

Specifically, about how Toyota Motor Manufacturing UK is going to become the... first car manufacturer in the UK to put up a large-scale solar panel array. How big is "large-scale." Well, this big (that takes you to the full-size infographic Toyota released, which says the array is made up of 17,000 solar panels, about 4.3 soccer pitches big (pitches > football fields). That means there is enough power created in a year (4.6 million kWh) to build around 7,000 cars. That sounds good (and, well, it is) but it's still only around five percent of the energy needed at Toyota's Burnaston plant, where Toyota makes the Auris hybrid, Auris and Avensis.
