Towards an AIDS-Free Generation IIt is the dream and desire of every mother to have a healthy baby - and to live to see that child grow and thrive. We have the knowledge and we have the means to help every mother fulfil this dream, including mothers living with HIV ... wherever they live. -Anthony Lake, UNICEF Executive Director PROGRESS AN AIDS-FREE GENERATION ONCE SEEMED JUST A DREAM. NOW WE CAN MAKE IT A REALITY. It is now time for the last push to move from 330,000 towards O by 2015. CHALLENGE WITHOUT DIAGNOSIS AND TREATMENT, ONE THIRD OF INFANTS WITH HIV WILL DIE BEFORE THE AGE OF ONE YEAR AND ALMOST HALF DURING THE SECOND YEAR OF LIFE One child is born with HIV almost every minute and a half. IN 2007, ABOUT 1350 CHILDREN WERE NEWLY INFECTED WITH HIV PER DAY, COMPARED TO 900 CHILDREN PER DAY IN 2011. -- 230,000 children under the age of 15 died from AIDS-related causes in 2011 -- 3.3 million children(<15) were living with HIV globally in 201| + 562,000 children in 2011 were receiving antiretroviral therapy compared to 456,000 in 2010 Antiretroviral treatment coverage is still much lower for children (28%) than for adults (54%). 00 Children account for nearly one in seven people with newly acquired HIV The beginning of the end of AIDS starts with children.
