Robert Downey Jr

After being released from the California Substance Abuse Treatment Facility and State Prison in 2000 for drug charges, Downey joined the cast of the TV series Ally McBeal. His character was written out when Downey was fired after two drug arrests in late 2000 and early 2001. After one last stay in a court-ordered drug treatment program, Downey finally achieved sobriety.

Gerard Butler

Butler has been open in interviews about struggling with alcoholism. In February 2012, Butler's publicist anounced that Butler had completed a course of treatment for substance abuse of pain killers at a rehab-centre. This was after Butler was concerned he was too reliant on prescribed pain relief medication which escalated when he was involved in a surfing incident before Christmas 2011

Lindsay Lohan

In 2006, Lohan attended Alcoholics Anonymous meetings. In early January 2007 Lohan admitted herself to the Wonderland Center rehabilitation facility. Lohan checked out on February 16, 2007 after completing a 30-day stay. In 2011 she entered the Betty Ford Center, a drug and alcohol treatment center, where she remained on court order for three months.

On May 20, 1998, Sheen overdosed while using cocaine and was hospitalized. On August 11, 1998, Sheen, already on probation in California for a previous drug offense, had his probation extended for an extra year and entered a rehab clinic. In a 2004 interview, Sheen admitted that the overdose was caused by his experimentation with injecting cocaine.

Ben Affleck

Ben Affleck entered alcohol rehab in 2001, with a spokesman for the actor saying that "Ben is a self-aware and smart man who had decided that a fuller life awaits him without alcohol". He quit smoking after starring in Smokin' Aces, in which he was required to smoke heavily, and lost his taste for it after a week of chain-smoking for his role

Mel Gibson

Mel Gibson has said that he started drinking at the age of thirteen in a 2002 interview about his time at NIDA, Gibson said, "I had really good highs but some very low lows. I found out recently I'm a manic depressive.". After years of drug and alcohol abuse Mel Gibson was praised for his compliance with the terms of his probation and his extensive participation in ongoing treatment

Colin Farrell

In December 2005, Farrell voluntarily checked into a rehabilitation treatment centre for addictions to recreational drugs and painkillers. He spoke plainly about it on the Late Show with David Letterman after he came out of rehab.

Demi Moore

Demi checked out of Utah's Cirque Lodge in March 2012, where she was allegedly treated for eating disorder issues, exhaustion and substance abuse. It came after she was hospitalised after she suffered a seizure-like episode at her Benedict Canyon home after smoking a substance, described on the 911 call as 'like incense'.

Daniel Radcliffe

Daniel Radcliffe admitted that he gave up alcohol in 2010 after he released that alcohol was becoming a problem. He told a magazine in 2012 that it was his opinion that he was a "really annoying, loud, inappropriate, messy drunk"

Robin Williams

During the late 1970s and early 1980s, Williams had an addiction to cocaine; he has stated that he has since quit. Williams was a close friend of and frequent partner alongside John Belushi. He says the death of his friend and the birth of his son prompted him to quit drugs. On August 9, 2006, Williams checked himself in to a substance-abuse rehabilitation center later admitting that he was alcoholic.
