Tony Hayward and BP: 100 days July 28 marks the 100th day of the oil spill. With BP boss Tony Hayward on his way out, here's the timeline of his downfall. bp Deepwater Horizon offshore oil rig April 20 11 workers die and 17 are injured in an explosion on BP's deepwater horizon oil rig. Oil begins leaking when the blowout preventer fails. 699ft U Breath-hold diving record April 29 U.S. President Barack Obama pledges "every single available resource" including the military, to contain the spreading spill. May- 1,083ft Scuba diving record May 11 Executives from BP, Transocean and Halliburton appear at congressional hearings in Washington, and blame each other for the spill. May 14 Hayward tells the Guardian: "The Gulf of Mexico is a very big ocean [...] the amount of volume of oil and dispersant we are putting into it is tiny in relation to the water volume" May 18 Tony Hayward tells Sky News the environmental impact will be: "very, very modest." May 19 Twitter parody account @BPglobalPR starts 3,300ft Deepest diving combat submarine May 28 Top Kill operation starts May 30 Hayward tells reporters: "there's no one who wants this over more than I do. I would love June- Top Kill operation fails my life back." June 3 BP spends $50m on national TV adverts. Obama says the money should have been spent on businesses hit by the spill. Oil June 17 At a Senate hearing, Hayward gives little away and fails to deliver answers that Senators want. June 19 Hayward takes part in a boat race around the Isle of Wight. President Obama's chief of staff said that there's no chance of a "second career in PR consulting" for the BP boss. June 30 Hurricane Alex, later downgraded to tropical storm status, begins to disrupt the cleanup, July July 5 BP says the spill has cost $3.12bn July 12 BP successfully installs a new cap July 16 After testing, BP says it has finally managed to halt the flow of oil, but the problem will not be resolved until a relief well is drilled.
