Then and Now - 45 Years of Internet Access

Then and Now: 45 Years of Internet Access Although it's hard to believe, access to the Internet only became commonplace over the last few decades. Here's how Internet connection has evolved over the years. Scroll down ARPANET & Dial Up 1969 The Mother of the Internet, ARPANET (Advanced Research Projects Agency) is first developed by the U.S. Department of Defense to support its projects within universities and research laboratories. ARPANET lays down the foundations for the Internet we know today and runs at a maximum speed of 50 Kilobytes Per Second. How long does it take to download a feature film with ARPANET? 6-7 days Mobile Broadband: Generation One (1G) 1979 Internet-access is developed for mobile phones, but you can't send text messages; just receive and make calls. This hefty contraption is fondly nicknamed "The Brick" by many users and can weigh more than 2 pounds! ISDNS 1988 An improvement on the dial-up phone system of yore. Integrated Services Digital Network (ISDN) combines speech and data on the same lines, instead of keeping them separate, resulting in better voice quality. ISDN runs at a maximum speed of 128 kbps. How long does it take to download a feature film with ISDN? 3 days Mobile Broadband: Generation Two (2G) 1991 Text messages and emails can now work in tandem with mobile broadband. DSL S 1997 Revitalising Internet connection through phone lines, Digital Subscriber Line (DSL) amplifies speed and quality. This is a vast improvment on the ISDN system. DSL is still widely used today; largely by those who are stuck with dial-up connection because they live in rural areas. Speeds can be anywhere between 128 kbps and 3 mbps, depending on your service provider. Wi-Fi ? 1997 Whether you're in a café or your own home, Wi-Fi is a highly recognisable method of connecting to the Internet. Completely wireless, as long as you are within a router's signal range, you can use the Internet freely. World Internet users : 2% Cable Internet Broadband 1998 Springboarding off the pre-existing cable TV network, cable Internet is created by tinkering with TV cable lines, to deliver an Internet connection to residential homes. World Internet users : 3% Domestic Broadband 2000 Broadband revolutionises the Internet, making it easy to watch videos online and download albums. Now, many people can't bear the thought of standard dial-up and cling to this connection, which runs at a greater speed! World Internet users : 7% Satellite Broadband 2003 Satellite TV is used alongside satellite broadband, which reaches out to everyone, no matter where they are in the world. Downside? The signal is very sensitive to weather conditions and location, meaning your Internet connection can be unpredictable. World Internet users : 12% Mobile Broadband: Generation Three (3G) 2003 With 3G, we really see the popularity of mobile Internet increase. Each generation introduces faster download speeds and a higher capacity for its users. At peak data rates, 3G reaches at least 200 kbps. How long does it take to download a film with 3G? 1.5 days Mobile Broadband: 2012 Generation Four (4G) Large data transfers get a huge boost from 4G. Peak speed requirements are a whopping 100 mbps. How long does it take to download a film with 4G? Just a 5 minute job! World Internet users : 36% The Current Day: Fibre Optic Broadband TODAY If you're impatient, when it comes to buffering videos or waiting for pages to load, fibre optic broadband promises lightning fast Internet speeds. Fibre optic can reach up to 300 mbps. How long does it take to download a film with Fibre Optic? 1 minute! World Internet users : 40% The Future: FUTURE Lightning Speed Downloads 4 At up to 1,000 mbps, Google Fiber is already threatening to take over Internet connectivity. However, in the future, we predict even faster Internet speeds through improved laser technology (yup, lasers - is that sci-fi enough for you?). This technology is already found in fibre optic cables, but advancements are being made even now! How long does it take to download a film with Google Fiber? Mere seconds.
