The heart of a nation Living with heart failure More than 750,000 people are currently living with heart failure. The burden of debilitating heart failure has risen relentlessly since the Sixties, inspiring a major new research programme by the British Heart Foundation to find a cure. British Heart Foundation The condition, which is often caused by damage to the heart during a heart attack, means the heart can no longer pump properly. It is one of the UK's leading causes of disability with some patients housebound and fighting for breath, making get- ting out of bed or eating a meal incredibly difficult. Deaths from Coronary Heart Disease (CHD) The number of British people dying of heart disease has more than halved in the last 50 years, from 165,216 deaths in 1961 to 80,233 deaths in 2009. However, as you can see this truly worthwhile achievement is nevertheless overshadowed by the increasing burden of heart failure. 160,000 died from CHD 1961 110,000 died from CHD 2001 An estimated 100,000 living with heart failure.
