TEACHER EDUCATION: Past, Present & Future 1834 A LOOK AT THE HISTORY Pennsylvania becomes the first state to require future teachers to pass a test of reading, writing and arithmetic. 1839 The first state teachers college opens in Lexington, Massachusetts, designed to set a curricular standard for future teachers.
