ile fewer Americans are taking vacations, www.besthospitalitydegrees.com has created an infographic entitled “Taking Off: Travel Trends in 2013” detailing the destinations, planning, and habits of those individuals who will be traveling this year.
65% of employees have planned to take a vacation this year, which is a dramatic decrease from 80% back in 2007. These trips show large favor toward summer vacations. 38% of respondents reported planning vacations during the summer, while 27% planned vacations during fall, 18% during spring, and 17% during winter. With summer’s heat, it’s no surprise most vacationers prefer a beach vacations.
The average cost of a family vacation tacks in at $1,415, with a breakdown of costs as follows:
- Transportation - 44%
- Food and beverages - 23%
- Lodging - 23% - Entertainment - 10%
With this hefty price tag, many families can’t afford to travel. In fact, 1 in 5 workers say they cannot afford a vacation, and 1 in 3 visitors to travel sites said that price was the single largest barrier for not booking the trip, which is a surprise, since 8 out of 10 travelers plan their trips online. 89% of vacationers also said they watched travel videos online while planning their adventures.

Unfortunately, 42% of employees have postponed or canceled travel plans due to work, and 4 in 10 managers admit that they expect their employees to check work-related emails while on vacation.
