Sustainablě Graphic Design WHAT IS sustainable graphic design? Basically, sustainable design is design and production activity (in all of its implementations : packaging, printed materials, publications, etc) that reduces adverse environmental impact as far as possible. The World Commission on Environment and Development defines sustainability as “Development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs". Climate change, animal extinctions, the number of severe storms and draughts is increasing and many other things; all the evidences that say : the earth is in distress. It's mostly because of many of our irresponsible choices in life and we need to change. One of the ways is to design sustainably. Because, we have a lot of choices, but only one earth, sadly. Companies like Comalco established active Cash-for-cans' 1980s campaigns to promote aluminium can recycling. 1992 Australia became one of the first countries to have a national voluntary recycling plan giving commitments at all industry levels. 1990/1993 The rate of household recycling in Australia continued to improve to this day. 02 Source: Purdue Research Foundation and US Environmental Protection Agency, 1996 & North Carolina Office of Waste Reduction and Recycling. More recently, recycling has become an everyday phenomenon for most people, spurred by concern about the impact of our waste disposal practices on the environment, Increasingly, our waste is being recognised as a valuable resource that shouldn't just be landfilled. Something to consider in post-design production—as a designer we can make better impact on the environment by having more considerations in proceeding to pour the pretty digital work onto papers.
