Sunglasses through History The first pair of sunglasses were sold in 1929, and created by Sam Foster. Sunglasses first became popular during the 1930s, when actors and actresses would wear them to protect their eyes from harsh studio lights. During World War Il in 1936, Ray Ban developed their iconic anti-glare aviators for pilots to protect their eyes, and see clearly. Sunglasses first became polarized in 1936, when Edwin H. Land first started experimenting to create lenses with his patented Polaroid filter.
