History Sambas, MPB classics, frevos, maxixes and classical music, with special arrangements. History History Established in 1985 in 'Posto 9", it was named after Tom Jobim (famous Brazilian MPB musician). He vsed to complain about the mold in his house in the Jardim Botânico area, and was suffering with the humidity there. For this reason, he used to say that he was living under "Christ armpits". The street block inspirations are the parties in Olinda, and Blocos de Sujo in Rio. Established in 1918, it is the oldest street block in Rio. It started when young rowers from the Botafogo Sailing Club, unhappy with the suspension of one of its members, began to make "organized mess" in the city. The anthem of the block called "Quem não chora, não mama" was created in the 30's, and is sung to date. The band was established in 1964. All its members used to wear suits and pretended to play musical instruments, but they actually hired a real band to play. Created amid a national political crisis, this street block used, ironically, the fun to criticize. Curiosities! Curiosities! Curiosities! 1 In 2012, an 160 people group called "300 of Sparta" attended the block. That was the biggest group to attend the Suvaco de Cristo. The oldest "Spartan", and long-time partygoer, is 78 years old! 1 In the past, to become one of the "balls" of the block, the partygoer had to go through a screening to prove that s/he was a good drinker, funny, over 21 years old and employed. Obviously, the exam to prove that you were good drinker is practical. 1 In the Banda flag, it is written "Yolhesman Crisbelles", slogan used during the dictatorship to instigate censorship, which does not have any meaning. Oscar Niemeyer is the patron of the band since 2010 and, this year, the block will pay tribute to the architect. 2 The Suvaco de Cristo sponsors the NGO Divinas Axilas, which trains residents of Dona Marta community to sew and manufacture costumes. 2 It is the most popular street block in Rio. In 2012 its parade gathered 2.500.000 people in the streets. Reasons to Parade Reasons to Parade This street block is the most democratic in Rio! Ideal for those who want to meet new and different people. Reasons to Parade If you do not enjoy beach and the heat of the city center, the Suvaco do Cristo is the street block for you! It is located in the Jardim Botânico area, where the weather is always chilly. There are also waterfalls, if you want to refresh yourself.
